Formation in Catechetical & Youth Ministries

All members of the lay faithful who exercise catechetical and youth ministries in the parish are expected to pursue appropriate training and certification as made available through the Ministry Formation Institute and the Office of Catechetical Ministry.

1. Parish leadership, especially Pastors, Administrators, Principals, and Pastoral Coordinators must ensure those called to exercise catechetical and youth ministries within the parish setting receive appropriate diocesan formation and certification. With due discretion to the unique financial situations, parishes/schools mayassist those who pursue basic ministry formation.

2. Upon completion of diocesan ministry formation programs, certification in pastoral ministry with a specialization in Catechetical, Catholic Schools or Youth Ministry will be granted individuals. Certification attests to the successful completion of program requirements for ministry formation. Certified individuals are then commissioned by the Pastor, Administrator, or Pastoral Coordinator to exercise this ministry for the particular faith community.

3. Individuals certified in these ministries will receive two certificates: one diocesan and the other recognized statewide throughout the dioceses of California.
