Confirmation Policy

POLICY

Each parish will provide catechesis for the Sacrament of Confirmation for baptized Catholic adults and youth

ADULTS
Adults, who are baptized Catholics, will be confirmed by the Bishop. There is to be one sponsor for Confirmation. Post-baptismal catechesis will be given by the parish/cluster of parishes and/or vicariates according to the resources available. The celebration of Confirmation for baptized Catholic adults will be celebrated with the Bishop at a diocesan celebration. This celebration coincides with the Easter season and will usually be celebrated on the Feast of Pentecost. Pastoral issues arising during this period will be addressed by the individual parishes.

There is to be one sponsor for Confirmation. Diocesan policy for the age of a sponsor is 18 years of age.

Those being confirmed (confirmandi) may not be ministers during celebration of the Sacrament, ie: lector.

YOUTH
For the Sacrament of Confirmation, parish Youth Ministry will have a catechesis process incorporated into a comprehensive youth ministry (see section on Ministry to/with Youth). Confirmation is one of the sacraments of initiation. Within their youth ministry, all parishes will offer a two-year process of catechesis for Confirmation for youth of High School age.
  • The candidate will be 16 years of age by April 1st of the year of Confirmation..
  • There is to be one sponsor for Confirmation. Diocesan policy for the age of a sponsor is 18 years of age.
  • To perform the role of the sponsor, a person must fulfill the conditions mentioned in Canon #874.
  • Those being confirmed (confirmandi) may not be ministers during celebration of the Sacrament, ie: lector.

IMPLEMENTATION

The catechesis for confirmation is inspired by the baptismal catechumenate found in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Catechesis would also include parents and sponsors. Parishes should plan their confirmation programs in order that adequate time is given for a two-year program. Youth, who are attending Catholic High School and have daily religious instruction, will return to their parish for catechesis of the Sacrament of Confirmation and participate in the liturgy assigned to the parish with the Bishop. While respecting the status of fully initiated members of the Catholic Christian community, children and youth of catechetical age who were initiated into Church through the rites of Christian initiation, without the benefit of catechumenate formation, may choose to enter into the catechetical process for Confirmation in order to deepen their understanding of the faith and be one with the community of youth seeking Confirmation. Their integration into the celebration of the sacrament may be designed by the parish. A suggested means of incorporation may be a solemn Affirmation of Faith at the celebration of Confirmation.

Additional information is available through the Office of Religious Education and Formation. For information regarding the liturgy for Confirmation, contact the Office of Worship and the Bishop's liturgy coordinator.
